Lake Mary Boulevard Pedestrian Bridges


Seminole County, Florida selected DRMP to design two pedestrian bridges spanning Lake Mary Boulevard in Lake Mary, Florida.  Each of the two bridges was constructed in a highly visible location of the Lake Mary, Florida city center.  The City of Lake Mary desired that the bridges be detailed having a Mediterranean/Italian style. 

Each of the bridges had a single main span over Lake Mary Boulevard supported by two 153-foot non-symmetric custom L-shaped prestressed beams.  The custom L-shaped beams included complex design and analysis to evaluate out-of-plane bending due to the prestressing of the non-symmetrical beam shape.  This concept allowed the beams to carry the bridge decking while also serving as an aesthetically pleasing portion of the safety enclosure and railing system.  The L-beam concept further resulted in additional cost savings associated with reduced ramp construction when compared with the number of ramp spans that would be required to match the grade of a deck placed on top of the beams.  The foundations for the ramps were made up of a combination of pile-supported piers in pond locations and shallow spread footings at the remaining locations. The bridge architecture features a highly decorative safety enclosure and decorative cladding walls at the main span piers.  The ramps leading up to the main span for each structure were comprised of ADA compliant precast slabs and precast landing components at the intermediate pier locations.

Use of precast elements saved money by avoiding time consuming construction techniques necessary to build similar components in place at the site.  Project was delivered within a tight 18 month design-build schedule.
