Heintzelman Boulevard and South Access Road Improvements at Orlando International Airport
Orange County, Florida

This project involved the construction of a 4.5 mile section of Heintzelman Boulevard - a new 4-lane, divided, urban arterial. This roadway will serve as a new entrance roadway to the Orlando International Airport's new South Terminal. In addition, about 1.5 miles of the existing 2-lane South Access Road would be widened to a 4-lane, divided rural section. The project involved five separate bridge structures ranging from 92 to 480 feet in length. Improvements included new potable water, sanitary, reclaimed water, power and communications lines; as well as extensive signage, landscaping, lighting and irrigation systems.

Special consideration was given to maintaining the FAA operating systems (LLWAS [severe weather alert system], Runway Lighting, and Approach Radar), as well as property access, and the integrity of the Wetland Preservation area that crosses the alignment.

Extensive coordination meetings were necessary to keep all disciplines on the design team, as well as the Client, informed of progress and design decisions.
