Noel vs. Ford Motor Company Accident Survey

DRMP conducted this survey utilizing 3D Laser Scanning in support of a lawsuit over an accident that resulted in a fatality on Florida’s Turnpike in Osceola County. DRMP collected over 92 million data points in the field using a Trimble CX 3D scanner. The raw point data was processed using Trimble Realworks software to remove “noise” caused by traffic. The resulting point cloud was modeled in Realworks to create a Terrain model, that was then exported to AutoCAD and converted to a Civil 3D Terrain Model. These CAD drawings modeled the roadway, including surface damage resulting from the accident. Linework was also extracted from the cloud to show lane striping, pavement edges, guardrail face, and other features that were used as reference points in the police reports. DRMP coordinated with Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise (FTE) to obtain a General Use Permit. Final deliverables were used as exhibits in court to provide visual aid in reconstructing the accident during the trial.

SR 686 3D Laser Scanning  

SR 686 (East Bay Drive) Resurfacing

DRMP conducted the topographic phase of this survey utilizing 3D Laser Scanning to support roadway design for this RRR project that is approximately 0.9 mile length in Largo, Florida. The project limits are from SR 686/East Bay Drive from SR 595/651/Missouri Avenue to East of Highland Avenue. DRMP collected over 189 billion data points in the field using a FARO Focus scanner. The raw point data was processed using FARO Scene software to create a single project point cloud, and linework and features were extracted from the point cloud into a FDOT compliant file set in MicroStation DGN and Geopak TIN formats using Certainty3D TopoDOT software. Scan-extracted DGN files were merged with conventional survey of areas that were obscured from view of the scanner and right of way and centerline information to create the fill set of required deliverables. Final deliverables were used by DRMP engineers to design construction plans for drainage improvements and roadway rehabilitation.
